Towing Issues: towing issue, cdl drivers, tow yard

Question
was in a wreck a couple of weeks ago involving a trailer and a piece of heavy
equipment. some guys came and got the trailer and equipment and hauled it
to a tow yard as a favor to the guy i was hauling the equipment for. the
trailer is still there. The trailer belongs to a friend of mine and i had to wait to
get someone over to the yard that has a cdl drivers license (i didnt realize it
but you have to have one to pull this trailer.) When they took the trailer and
the piece of equipment I told them that I did not want them to take it if they
were going to charge me. they told me that it was a favor and got angry that I
was even asking. It has been a lot longer than I though it would take to go
get it but I am finally going to be able to get it today. They are telling me I
have to pay them $180 now because it took to long for me to come and get
it. I have been trying to get this handled since day 1 but havent been
successful. Can they hold the trailer hostage if I dont pay. This happened in
Mesa AZ.

Answer
Short answer is YES,  they provided a service (even if they said it was a favor) and as such they deserve to be paid...

It also sounds like they caught wind that "insurance" was involved and as such they want to get a part of the pie.

And I hate to be this way, but when you are pulling a trailer of any kind you need to make sure that your drivers license is at the correct level to do this... Some states have it set up where if you pull any kind of a trailer you need a license which is just not a "standard drivers license"  (think revenue here, increased fees is more money for the state)
