Towing Issues: Disconnect Driveshaft necessary on manual transmission?, manual tranny, automatic transmissions

Question
I have a 1998 2wd Toyota Tacoma and have been told I MUST disconnect the driveshaft. I always thought with a manual tranny the driveshaft could remain connected. Which is correct?

Answer
Ok Blake, I take this question to deal with towing the vehicle behind a motor home.  While this is not my area of expertise, general towing is...

Now the issue here is the lubrication of the bearings in the transmission... Newer vehicles with either manual or automatic transmissions have many moving parts which need the lube to keep them from sustaining damage internally..
Some vehicles do have a distance they can be towed on the drive wheel (rear wheels on yours) which are determined by the maker of the vehicle and the parts in it.

now if that link worked this is what we use in commercial towing and it says that if it is towed from the front (or basically wheels down) that it has a 50 mph limit for 50 miles.

I hope this helps you.
