Towing Issues: Mazda Miata damaged from towing?, beating a dead horse, clutch kit

Question
Hello- I had the unfortunate experience about a month ago of having my car (a 1991 Mazda Miata) towed overnight by the NYPD in Brooklyn, NY. I was parked in a spot I'd used several times but did not know was illegal. The $185 tow bill stung, as did the $165 violation. But the worst came within two days, when  the car would no longer shift into gear, resulting the the replacement of the clutch kit and master cylinder to the tune of $1246 in repairs.

Now I am trying to dispute the $165. violation-- with information on all the extenuating circumstances (including the fact that parking has been reduced on my block for over two months due to construction). I'm  fairly sure the damage to my car was caused by the towing. Sadly, I no longer have my owner's manual, but I  remember it saying that Miata's must be towed in a particular way, with certain care, or damage could result. Can you offer me any information that would help? Thank you so much.

Answer
you can go to http://www.towspec.com  and look up towing instructions...

But from what I know of the NYPD tow trucks, they grab it and go and damage be damned attitude....  You might be beating a dead horse as they might have immunity from damages... Several City towing services have that protection but check into it before you do anything..
