Towing Issues: Best type of wrecker?, flatbed tow trucks, tail dragger

Question
Vernon...  This is a general question for the next time we have a need for towing service.  I notice that flat bed wreckers are becoming numerous these days although the old tail-dragger types are still with us.  Are the flat bed types any better, safer, etc.???

Answer
Sorry for the delay in answering...we just got home from vacation.

Generally the flatbed tow trucks (call rollbacks and car carriers in some regions) are better for service work.  They are safer because the vehicle is on top of the truck away from traffic. (It can't get hit if it ain't on the ground.)  They are great for distance towing. (No wear and tear on the vehicle being towed.) However don't expect a flatbed truck to be able to put your car in your garage off of a tight alley. But this is not to say that a regular tow truck with wheel lift attachment is not safe. A competent operator can tow any vehicle just as safe if the vehicle is towed by manufacturer and towing industry standards.

Both are good choices.  It's depends on your desires which with some people is predicated by the value of their car.  You would not want to tow your Ferrari with a regular tow truck (although I have towed them that way successfully, thank goodness). However, you may have to pay a few extra bucks for a "special request" for a flatbed.  But with an old "everyday" car a regular tow truck is sufficient and safe.
