Tractor Repair: re-installing carburetor on International 464, radiator hoses, rubber elbow

Question
Tractor is probably 40 or more years old.  We removed the carburetor and replaced some parts and now trying to put the carburetor back on the tractor.  The end of the carb. on the right (facing the tractor) won't go back into the hard rubber elbow.  This is where the air comes in.  We don't know if the rubber had hardened while the carb. was removed, or if the prior owner just did not have it installed correctly.  There was a clamp around the rubber elbow when it was removed.  We don't see that it is possible to attach the carb to this elbow without inserting it into the elbow and clamping it.  My husband has a skin condition on his hands and cannot use them very much, so I usually get involved in the tractor repair work.  Would appreciate any help you can offer.  We should have looked closer when we undid the carb to see how it came off.

Answer
Hello,

It's very importand that the carburetor fit into the hose correctly so that the engine does not suck in any unfiltered air.  A small amount of dust will wear out the engine in a short time.  I'm sure that the hose has hardened with age and has become brittle and I think you should replace it.  The part number is 402500R2.  It's probably the original one, and when they get that old, it's typical for the rubber to become hard from the engine heat, or if oil gets on them, they swell up and get soft and mushy.  If the clamps are hard to turn, replace them also so it will seal properly to keep the dust out.  Any #44 hose clamp will work.  Check the air filter and clean it or replace it.  Inspect the radiator hoses and fan belt also and replace them if questionable.
