Volkswagen Repair: Check Engine Light, poor gas mileage, oxygen sensor

Question
1998 New Beetle 2.0 47,000 Miles
Ryan,
I was driving yesterday and the check engine light came on and remained on but was NOT flashing. The performance of the engine did not change nor did its "sound". Before I spend $75 to have it computer analyzed, I am wondering if there might be something I could check that perhaps caused the light to come on. I purchased the car used last summer and am not sure of the service record. I know from past experience with other makes that the Oxygen Sensor often causes the light to come on but I have absolutely no experience with the VW. Any suggestions you might make would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,

Answer
Hi George,

There are so many reasons for CEL its almost imposssible to diagnose, O2 sensor is one usaully accompanied by poor gas mileage. Also a loose or improperly installed gas cap can cause it to come on as well.  You could try to find someone local to Vag-com it, you dont have to go to the dealer.  Check this list for someone close to you and send them an email, chances are they'd be more honest and cheaper than the dealer.

VW will also VAG-COM if you take it in for a summer maint. package, which is $59.99

Good Luck,
Ryan
