Dodge: Dodge Truck, excessive oil consumption, dodge engines

Question
I hear noises similar to a bearing,or engine "ping" at 2700 - 3000 RPM's. It doesn't matter if my 1997 Dodge Ram Pick-up truck is at any particular speed. This noise is not audible when the truck is in "park" or "neutral", and I rev-up the RPM's to 2700-3000. The noise is audible in 4 wheel drive and/or 2 wheel drive. When I use the truck to snow plow the noise is louder,(at the same RPM's). This truck is a 1500 extended cab.    Thanx,  Chris Stoey

Answer
Chris,
I know this will sound crazy, but mine does the same thing when it is put in reverse in the morning right after you start it up.But it stops after a few minutes.I really don't know what to tell you on this one because the dodge transmissions are junk.I had a transmission mechanic drive and listen to mine.He says i can fix it for about $1500.00.But when i asked him what the problem was he had no explanation. But i will mention that the dodge engines are having problems with the plenum gasket,i had to change mine because of a ping and excessive oil consumption.Truck runs a lot better.I would check that but you will have to check the vacuum on the engine.that's the way to tell if the gasket is blown.
