I have already answered this question for you once before.
Your Question was:
I installed a remanufactured (Ford) starter in 4.2 litre and it is making grinding noise as if the starter gear is remaining in contact with the ring gear after motor starts. I have shimmed out the starter but problem remains. Old starter had braided wire between solenoid and starter windings burnt or corroded off. Is there anything special I should be doing? Could a defective starter relay cause this problem? Cheers, Avalon

Answer
Hi,

I have never shimmed a ford starter before in my career, but I guest its always one out there that you  shim. The grinding that you are hearing is the teeth on the starter hot meshing correctly with the flywheel on the engine. You should remove the starter and look at the teeth on the flywheel on the engine and look for damaged teeth or missing teeth if ok than the starter is at fault.

Thanks
