GM-GMC: 99 Chevy Silverado Removing Rotor, chevy silverado, brake rotor

Question
I am trying to replace my rear brake rotors. It seems the emergency brake on the inside has worn a groove and I can't get the old rotor over it. I can't see any adjusters for the emergency brake. How do I get it off short of beating it off with a hammer and damaging the emergency brake?
Also, My service 4WD light is coming on occationaly. When it is on and I hit one of the buttons to switch to 4WD nothing happens. What should I check or should I take it in to get the trouble code?

Answer
Paul,

The bad news on your brake rotor is that if the E-brake shoes are worn out inside and have "Cut a Groove" the only way to get them off is to force them. There is a adjuster inside the rotor but you cannot access it from the outside. your could try prying them of with a pry bar or using a "Dead Blow" hammer to hammer them off, but if they are that chewed up inside, the surface will probably not be machine to new again anyways. This means you will need new rotors and the damage you cause removing them is of no concern. Always replace these rotors in pairs, yes they are pricey, but it will cause problems with the rear ABS if they are to uneven left to right. As for your 4whl drive problem, i would recomend that you take the truck to a GM dealer. I hate to do this but unless you know a private shop with a GM Scan-Tool they will never be able to access the 4whl drive module. I have tried, and after using the Gm scan-Tool at some training courses, its definetly quicker to diagnose with the correct tool. Hope this helps
