Suzuki: Rear vibration, rear wheel bearings, suzuki sidekick jx

Question
I have a 1995 Suzuki Sidekick JX, 4wd, 4dr.  When accelerating to 55mph and over, a loud vibration appears to be coming from the rear underside of the vehicle.  Previous owner said his mechanic said it was coming from the rear axle.  What are some possibilities of the problem.  Thanks

Answer
one of the most common problems causing a vibration is the U-joint at the rear axle.
It's possible the ring and pinion bearings are badly worn.
You really need to determine the cause of the problem for yourself.
You can unbolt the driveshaft at the rear, and see if the u-joint moves freely and smoothly.
The rest involves checking the rear wheel bearings by withdrawing the axles and checking the bearings for smoothness, and removing the differential for inspection.
If you're mechanically inclined, some of that is doable yourself......
