Tires: 4 - 4 Wheels for my tent trailer, starcraft tent trailer, mazda miata

Question
I have a Starcraft tent trailer that I am converting to a utility trailer. I'd like to increase the tire and wheel size from the current 5.30-12 on 4 - 4" rims. What cars came with rims of that bolt pattern that might fit (depending upon the offset)? I know that my Mazda Miata has that size. What else should I ask the auto recycler for? How is the off-set measured?

Answer
Glen,

There is quite a list of vehicles that have a 4X100mm bolt pattern - too lengthy to list - it's quite popular with small cars, especially foreign models.

Offset is the amount of distance from the center of the rim to the mounting surface with negative pushing the mounting face inwards.  Use a straight edge across the rim flange and measure to the mounting surface (this is called backspace), then take into account the thickness of the rim flange.

But you might want to consider some places that stock both trailer tires and rims as a unit.  I'll bet you find exactly what you are looking for and the price won't be too bad considering you'll have everything you need.

BTW, if you were to use a passenger tire for a trailer, you have to derate the load capacity of the tire by 10% to account for the stiffer springs used for trailers.

hope this helps.
