Truck Repair: steering wander, ford f350, ford dealer

Question
Dear Van,
I have to constantly correct the steering of my 2000, Ford F350, V8 Diesel Dually, as I'm driving down the road---left/right, right/left,  It does not want to "track" well.  I had my local mechanic lift it and check for looseness.  He replaced what he called a stabilizer, which cost $70.00, but it did not help.  He said everything else seemed tight enough.  I know balljoints; tie rod ends' bearings, etc. could all be involved in the problem, but I do not have the resources to re-build the front-end of this truck.  My question: What will give me the best results for the least amount of expense.  My mechanic says the suspension system is "safe", it is just not pleasant to drive.  My truck has 146K miles and the front tires are excellent.  I just had it aligned at the Ford dealer hoping it would help---but it didn't.
What would you do short of a complete front-end overhaul?
Best regards,
Paul

Answer
Hi Paul,
I wouldn't do a front end overhaul.
Toe in adjustment will cause wander, even if it is just a little way off.
Take it back to where they aligned it, and ask them to check the toe. They should correct it for nothing if they aligned it.
Also, check for free play in the steering gear box.
