Save on repair expenses and stretch your vehicle maintenance budget by replacing the blower motor resistor in your 1997 Buick LeSabre yourself. The resistor regulates the fan speed for the air conditioning and heating system. If your blower has stopped working because of a burned resistor, you may make the repair at home in only a few minutes using only a few tools.
Open the hood and detach the negative (black) battery cable with a wrench.
Look for the fuse block toward the back of the engine compartment. This is a plastic black box with fuses and relays inside.
Lift and remove the fuse block cover and unfasten the center bolt from the mounting bracket and the cable attached to the box. Use a ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket.
Remove the fuses and relays from the box and the fuse block mounting bolts using the ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket. Once you remove the fuse block box, you will see the heater and air conditioning module on the firewall. This is a rectangular box with a rounded side of the right.
Unplug the electrical connector on top of the heater and the air conditioning module. This wire harness connects to the blower motor resistor block.
Unfasten the three bolts holding the blower motor resistor block to the top of the heater and air conditioning module using the ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket. When ready, remove the resistor block and the gasket underneath from the vehicle.
Position the new blower motor resistor block in place along with a new gasket and tighten the three mounting bolts with the ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket.
Plug in the electrical connector to the blower motor resistor block.
Replace the fuse block, tighten the mounting bolts with the ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket, and reinstall the fuses and relays following the schematic on the fuse block cover.
Fasten the center bolt and cable to the fuse block with the ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket and then replace the cover.
Reattach the negative (black) battery cable with the wrench and close the hood.
