How to Take Apart a GM Ignition Switch

The ignition switch on your GM vehicle is located close to the steering wheel, below the instrument cluster. If you wish to disassemble the ignition switch, you must first remove it from the vehicle. Once it is detached, you can remove its securing screws and pull it apart. Removing the ignition switch from your GM vehicle may take some time, but it is a fairly simple and straightforward task.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Place the vehicle into "Park" and engage the emergency brake. Turn off the engine. If your GM vehicle has airbags equipped, disconnect the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench and wait five minutes for the vehicle's air bags to disengage.

  • Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry off the upper and lower steering column shrouds.

  • Remove the four steering column-to-dashboard bolts with a socket wrench and slowly lower the steering wheel onto the driver's seat. This will allow access to the ignition switch.

  • Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to disconnect the actuating rod from the ignition switch. Remove the two securing screws and pull the ignition switch off the vehicle.

  • Remove the two screws holding the ignition switch together and pull it apart. If it is stuck, use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the two halves apart.
