How to Install a CV Boot on a Toyota Tacoma

The CV boot on your is a rubber cover that fits over and protects the CV joint on your Toyota Tacoma. The CV joint attaches to the wheel and your transmission and helps your front end make turns. A torn or ripped boot can allow dirt and debris to get into your CV joint, which can affect the turning on your Tacoma. Installing your own CV boot is a do it yourself job that can be accomplished in about 45 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Tire tool
  • Tire jack
  • Jack stand
  • Pry bar
  • Socket set
  • Replacement CV joint boot
  • Loosen your Tacoma's lugs with a lug wrench.

  • Slip your tire jack under the frame near the front wheel on which you will be replacing the CV boot. Jack your Tacoma up and then remove your lug nuts and tire.

  • Remove the wheel hub nut with your socket set. It is located on the back, or inner, side of your Tacoma's wheel.

  • Extract the control arm bolt with your socket set. Also remove the lower ball joint from the lower control arm to access the knuckle.

  • Pull, or cut, the old CV boot off the knuckle. Apply a small amount of bearing grease to the rim of the new CV boot and slip it over the knuckle and into place.

  • Reconnect the lower ball joint to the lower control arm. Reinsert the control arm bolt and tighten it with your socket set. Finally, reinstall your Tacoma's hub nut.

  • Place your Tacoma's tire back on and then put your lug nuts back on. Tighten them fully with your tire iron and then lower your vehicle off the jack stands.
