How to Install an Oil Pump on a 2002 5.3L Chevy 4WD

The oil pump in your 2002 Chevy is used to properly lubricate the engine while the vehicle is in motion. If your oil pump becomes damaged it can cause the engine to become damaged as it creates friction between the pistons, bearings and shafts. If your oil pump becomes damaged you should look to replace it before taking your vehicle out on the road. You can pick up a replacement oil pump from your local auto store.

Things You'll Need

  • Drain pan
  • Car jack
  • Jack stands
  • Replacement oil pump
  • Screwdriver set
  • Wrench set
  • Wooden mallet
  • Place your vehicle on a flat surface and engage the parking brake. Place a car jack underneath the vehicle. Place the jack at an equal distance between the front and rear tire. Raise the vehicle off the ground. Support the car jack by placing jack stands along side it.

  • Place the drain pan underneath the oil pan. The oil pan is located directly below the engine. Remove the drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan. Drain the oil in to the drain pan. Once the oil pan has been completely emptied, reattach the drain plug.

  • Use a wrench to remove the bolts which hold the oil pan in place. Lift the oil pan out of the vehicle. If you are struggling to remove it with your hands knock it loose carefully with a wooden mallet. This will give you access to the oil pump.

  • Remove the one mounting bolt which holds the oil pump in place. Pull the old oil pump out of the vehicle. Line the new oil pump correctly so that the driver spine at the top lines up correctly with the one going down the cam gear. Secure in place with the mounting bolt at a torque of 35 foot-pounds.

  • Reattach the oil pan and fix securely in place with the mounting bolts. Place new oil back in to the oil pan. Lower the vehicle carefully off the car jack. Turn on the engine to check that the new oil pump works correctly.
