How to Install a Speed Sensor on a 2005 Chevrolet Impala

The 2005 Chevrolet Impala's vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is a gear-driven device that communicates information about the gears to the car's computer. The VSS is used to determine and maintain vehicle speed during cruise control. Cruise control is also activated and deactivated using the VSS. Replace the speed sensor on a 2005 Chevrolet Impala when you experience problems with cruise control or shifting gears, or when the computer can't determine shifting points.

Things You'll Need

  • Lug wrench
  • Sockets
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Lift the Impala with the floor jack. Place the jack stands under the front end to support the vehicle.

  • Remove the lug nuts on the right front wheel, using the lug wrench. Take off the wheel.

  • Push in the tabs of the speed sensor and pull out the harness wiring. Unscrew the bolt on the sensor with a socket. Remove the speed sensor by pulling it out of its casing.

  • Check and see if the new speed sensor has an O-ring in the packaging. If it doesn't, you will need to use the old O-ring. Remove the O-ring from the old sensor and wipe off any grease and debris. Place the O-ring on the new sensor.

  • Snap the new speed sensor into place in the casing. Reattach the bolt and the wiring harness to finish securing the sensor.
