How do I Remove the Horn Pad From a 1500 Work Truck?

Removing the horn pad from your Dodge Ram 1500 work truck is a job that you can complete in about an hour. The horn pad assembly also includes the driver's side airbag, so caution must be taken to diasble the airbag before attempting to remove the horn pad. The Dodge Ram driver's airbag is charged from the battery by two electrical connectors on the back of the horn pad, so you'll disconnect the battery first. Save yourself some time and money by removing the horn pad on your own.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end wrench
  • Phillip's head screwdriver
  • Torx screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Unfasten the negative battery cable of your Dodge Ram 1500 work truck from the battery post with an open-end wrench. Leave the battery cable off for about thirty minutes before attempting to remove the horn pad to verify that the airbag is fully discharged.

  • Unfasten the two screws on the lower dash panel below the steering wheel with a Phillip's head screwdriver. Remove the dash panel from the dash board, and set it out of the way.

  • Disconnect the three Torx screws of the steering column shroud underneath the steering column with a Torx screwdriver, and set the shroud off to the side.

  • Detach the three metal clips on the back of the steering wheel with a flat head screwdriver, and lift the horn pad assembly off the steering wheel just enough to locate the electrical conectors in the back of the pad.

  • Press in on the two yellow plastic electrical connectors behind the horn pad assembly, and detach the connectors from the back of the pad. Remove the horn pad assembly from the 1500 work truck.
