Homemade Snorkels

The addition of a snorkel to your vehicle can save you thousands of dollars in damages if you go off-road or if you live in an area that is prone to flooding. You can attach pipes to the air hose and run them vertically so water does not get into the engine. You can purchase a snorkel kit and have a mechanic fit it for you but this will cost several hundred dollars. It is possible to make your own snorkel kit using plastic drainage pipe or flexible aluminum.

Things You'll Need

  • 6 feet of straight plastic drain pipe
  • Right-angle joints
  • 8 feet of flexible aluminum pipe
  • PVC glue
  • Drill with a hole-cutting attachment
  • Saw
  • Spanner
  • Screwdriver
  • Zip ties

Plastic Drain Pipe

  • Disconnect the air hose at the output end; this is a long, black hose and can be removed using a spanner or screwdriver, depending on the attachment.

  • Work out how many right-angled attachments you will need and where to drill a hole in the fender of the car.

  • Make a hole in the fender where the pipes will exit with the drill and hole-cutting attachment.

  • Connect the pipes that will be inside the engine bay using the PVC glue and attach them to the disconnected end of the air hose.

  • Construct the vertical part of the snorkel using two right-angled pieces and the straight pipe so the snorkel will now go up along the windshield. Connect the parts with the PVC glue.

  • Attach the vertical part of the snorkel to the part that emerges from the engine bay.

  • Secure the snorkel to the body of the car using the zip ties.

Aluminum Pipe

  • Disconnect the air hose at the output end.

  • Make a hole in the fender where the pipes will exit with the drill and hole-cutting attachment.

  • Run the pipe from the roof down past the windshield and through the hole and attach it to the output end of the air hose.

  • Secure the snorkel to the body of the car using the zip ties.
