How to Change the Gear Knob on a Ford Ranger

The gear shift knob on the Ford Ranger serves two purposes. First, it holds the gear shift pattern diagram, which is embedded in the top of the shift knob. Second, it provides an ergonomic grip on the shifter for easier and more comfortable use by the driver. Over time the gear shift knob can wear out and the splines that hold it to the shifter can strip. When this happens, you'll need to replace the knob. Anyone with a little mechanical aptitude can change the gear shift knob on a Ford Ranger in less than 10 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • New gear shift knob
  • Grab the old gear shift knob firmly with both hands.

  • Pull the old gear shift knob up and off the gear shifter.

  • Align the splines of the new gear shift knob with the splines on the shifter.

  • Push the new gear shift knob down onto the shifter arm with both hands.
