How to Locate a Block Number on a Toyota Engine

Major engine-block repairs require that you know the "block number" on your Toyota. The block number tells a repair facility what engine block you have and where that block was manufactured. The number is embossed on the engine block on the driver's side of the engine. To locate the number, you have to crawl under the vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Flashlight
  • Shop rag
  • Crawl under the driver's side of the vehicle. Position your head below the exhaust manifold on the driver's side.

  • Locate the black rectangular metal plate. It is approximately 2 inches long and 1/2 an inch wide. The vehicle identification number is on this plate.

  • Look to the left of the metal plate, towards the rear of the vehicle. The block number is embossed on the plate. Wipe off the plate with a shop rag. Use a flashlight to make it easier to read the number. On most Toyotas, the number starts with "1GR."
