How to Replace a Camshaft Position Sensor on a 1994 Mustang

Although the 1994 Ford Mustang was available with either a six-cylinder or eight-cylinder engine, only the six-cylinder engine was equipped with a camshaft position sensor. The sensor is essentially a magnetic switch driven by the camshaft. As the engine's speed varies, the sensor relays important information to the engine's computer-controlled system. A defective sensor typically results in starting difficulties. Although a defective sensor cannot be repaired, replacement is fairly straightforward.

Things You'll Need

  • Chalk
  • Socket wrench
  • Open and support the hood.

  • Locate the sensor behind the water pump on the top of the timing chain cover.

  • Mark the position of any identifiable portion of the sensor, such as the seam that runs down the side of the sensor, on the timing chain cover with chalk to allow you to insert the new sensor in the same position.

  • Disengage the wiring connection from the top of the sensor.

  • Unfasten and remove the sensor's single bolt with a socket wrench to release the sensor's hold-down bolt.

  • Lift the hold-down bolt away from the sensor.

  • Slide the sensor out of the timing chain cover.

  • Insert the new sensor into the timing chain cover. Make sure that the sensor aligns with the mark you made on the timing chain cover.

  • Position the hold-down clamp against the sensor.

  • Install and tighten the sensor's bolt through the hold-down clamp and into the timing chain cover with a socket wrench.

  • Plug the wiring connection onto the sensor.
