How to Change a 1999 Monte Carlo Camshaft Sensor

The camshaft position sensor in a 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo is an important component of the diagnostic computer system. It relays information to the engine computer about the direction, speed and position of the camshaft. The engine computer takes this information and uses it to make ignition related calculations such as when to fire the spark plugs and how to adjust the timing. When this sensor fails it must be switched with a replacement camshaft sensor. New camshaft sensors are available from most auto parts stores and automotive dealerships.

Things You'll Need

  • Battery terminal wrench
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • Metric socket set
  • Clean motor oil
  • Replacement camshaft sensor
  • Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  • Find the camshaft sensor on the rear side of the engine block approximately 6 inches below the cylinder head.

  • Disconnect the electrical connector from the camshaft sensor and remove the sensor's retaining bolt.

  • Pull the sensor out of the engine block. Apply a light coating of motor oil to the replacement sensor and slide it into the block.

  • Reinstall the retaining bolt and reconnect the electrical connector.

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal and start the vehicle. Verify that the engine operates properly.
