Replacing a faulty ignition switch in the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am is a straightforward process that should take only about 15 minutes to complete. The most difficult part is making sure all of the trim panels line up properly when you reinstall them. You can purchase or order a replacement switch at most auto-parts stores.
Remove both covers from the steering column by removing the three screws on the underside and snapping the covers apart.
Remove the screws that hold the instrument panel trim in place and pull out the trim panel. Unscrew and remove the instrument panel, disconnecting all electrical connectors.
Unbolt and remove the ignition switch. Disconnect the electrical connection and metal cable from the switch.
Insert the key and turn it to the "Run" position. Pull on the key to slide the cylinder out of the switch.
Slide the cylinder into the replacement switch and turn the key to "Off". Reconnect the electrical connection and cable, and bolt the switch into place. Plug in and attach the instrument panel. Attach the trim panel and steering column covers.
