How to Shut Off the Indicator Chime on a Ford Freestar Van

Most modern vehicles have seat belt warning chimes, coupled with a flashing dash indicator light. The Ford Freestar minivan is no exception. Ford refers to the system as the "Belt Minder." This warning exists to remind you to buckle up for safety. However, you can disable or shut off the indicator chime and light, if desired. The process must be done separately for the driver's and passenger's side seat belts.

  • Unbuckle the seat belt and turn your key to the "Off" position. Set the parking brake for safety.

  • Turn the key to "Run," without cranking the engine. Wait 60 seconds until the seat belt indicator light turns off and the indicator chime stops.

  • Buckle and unbuckle the seat belt nine times within 50 seconds (end with the seat belt unbuckled).

  • Wait for the airbag indicator light to appear. Once it appears, buckle, then unbuckle the seat belt again. The seat belt warning light will flash 12 times, confirming that the system is disabled.

  • Repeat the process with the passenger side safety belt.
