Alpine Type R Wire Installation

Alpine's Type-R subwoofers are designed to be high-performance subwoofers that are capable of handling lots of power. The Type-R subwoofers range in size from 8 inches to 15 inches and feature either a 2-ohm or 4-ohm dual voice coil. A 2-ohm Type-R subwoofer will operate at 1-ohm when wired in parallel to an amplifier capable of carrying a 1-ohm load. A 4-ohm Type-R subwoofer will operate at 2-ohms when wired in parallel to the same amplifier or an amplifier capable of carrying a 2-ohm load.

Things You'll Need

  • Crescent wrench
  • Tape measure
  • Mono-channel amplifier
  • 14-gauge speaker wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • Open the engine compartment and locate the battery. Disconnect the black negative (-) battery cable using a crescent wrench.

  • Measure the distance between the amplifier and the Alpine Type-R subwoofer. Cut two sections of 14-gauge speaker wire 12 inches longer than the measurement. Remove a ¼ inch section of the plastic protective coating from each of the four ends using wire strippers. Insert one end into the positive (+) speaker terminal on the amplifier by depressing the thumb tab. Insert the other end into one of the two positive terminals on the subwoofer. Insert one end of the other section of speaker wire into the negative speaker terminal on the amplifier. Insert the other end into one of the two negative speaker terminals on the subwoofer.

  • Measure the distance between the two positive terminals on the subwoofer. Cut two sections of 14-gauge speaker wire three inches longer than the measurement. Remove a ¼ inch section of the plastic protective coating from each of the four ends using wire strippers. Insert one end into the same positive terminal on the subwoofer that houses a longer section of speaker wire. Insert the other end of the wire into the other positive terminal on the subwoofer. Insert one end of the other section of speaker wire into the same negative terminal on the Type-R subwoofer that houses a longer section of speaker wire. Insert the other end of the wire into the other negative terminal on the subwoofer.
