How to Install a Stereo in a Honda Prelude

The Honda Prelude was a sports coupe built from 1978 through 2001. Popular among Honda enthusiasts because of its modification potential, the Prelude appears at many car shows across the country. Upgrading the deteriorating stereo is more a necessity than an option for anyone who wants music while driving.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Wiring harness adaptor
  • Disconnect the negative cable from the car battery to keep any accidental shorts from damaging the electrical system. Write down the security code of the original stereo and store it in a safe place.

  • Pry out the plastic trim ring from around the head unit and climate controls with a flathead screwdriver. Place a piece of thin cloth under the screwdriver tip to help minimize scratching the plastic pieces.

  • Remove the four screws holding the stereo in place and pull the radio out. The pocket attaches to the bottom of the head unit assembly and will slide out as well.

  • Unscrew the top and bottom screw from the front of the frame, and pull the head unit through the front. Insert the new head unit into the frame and secure the new stereo faceplate.

  • Pull out the old wiring harness and snap in the new adaptor. Connect the adaptor to the back of the stereo and slide the radio and frame into the dash.

  • Test the stereo to ensure the speakers and setting work properly. Replace the trim and molding before adjusting the new Honda Prelude stereo your personal taste.
