How to Wire a Kia Sorrento Trailer

When equipped with a trailer hitch, the Kia Sorrento is capable of towing a small trailer. To do this legally, however, you must install a trailer wiring harness. This harness connects the tail lights on the trailer with the tail lights on the Sorrento so they both activate at the same time. This is designed to help prevent the trailer from being accidentally rear-ended while traveling. To do this, you need a few basic parts and about 30 minutes of time.

Things You'll Need

  • Trailer wiring harness kit
  • Cable ties
  • Open the trunk on the Sorrento. Remove the spare tire tool kit from the trunk with your hands and assemble the tools. Install the long tool into the hole in the bumper and use the tool to lower the spare tire from underneath the Kia.

  • Lay down and look up at the spare tire area. Locate the tow plug harness underneath the Kia. Unplug both halves of the plug with your hands. Plug in one side of this tow plug into the t-connector on the trailer wiring harness, and plug in the other side of the stock tow plug to the other side of the t-connector.

  • Run the remaining end of the trailer wiring harness to the hitch and secure it in place using a cable tie. Peel back the protective adhesive backing on the converter box. Stick the converter box to the backside of the bumper.

  • Secure any excess wire to the chassis with the cable ties. Reinstall the spare tire using the tools from the kit, then put the tools back in the trunk.
