Motor vehicle law varies somewhat from state to state, but one thing they all agree on is that trailers must have lights that work in conjunction with the tow vehicle. Many trucks come with trailer connectors as standard equipment, but adding one to a vehicle that did not is a project for the handyman which should take an hour or two and requires only a few simple tools.
Locate the wiring harness behind the rear bumper of your Chevy.
Turn on your truck's parking lights.
Separate the plastic loom covering the wiring harness to expose all the wires inside.
Using your test light, probe the wires you exposed and find the one wire with power in it. Using a Scotchlok connector, connect the brown wire from your flat-4 harness to this wire.
Shut off the parking light and turn on the right turn signal. You'll probably need the ignition key turned on for this step, but don't start the engine.
Probe the other wires in the exposed harness and locate the one with intermittent power. It will pulse with the flashing of the turn signal. Connect the green wire from your Flat 4 connector to this wire, again using a Scotchlok connector.
Turn of the right turn signal and turn on the left turn signal.
Probe the exposed wires in the harness again. Find the wire with intermittent power. Connect the yellow wire from the Flat 4 connector to this wire with a Scotchlok connector.
Install a ring terminal on the white wire from the Flat 4 connector and attach to a metal part of the truck, using a self-tapping screw.
Secure the connector to the trailer hitch area with a nylon wire tie.
