How to Install a Spacer Lift on a Jeep

Jeeps are popular vehicles to customize --- one favored way to do so is to lift the truck. There are myriad ways to lift your Jeep, but one affordable option is to install a spacer lift. These are small spacers that go between the coil spring and the frame, allowing you to get an extra 1 to 2 inches of suspension height in the process. This process takes a few hours to perform but can be done at home with just a few basic tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Open-end wrench set
  • Spacer lift kit

Front Suspension

  • Park the Jeep on a level surface and lift it up onto a set of four jack stands with the jack, making sure that all of the wheels are off the ground. Take off the wheels with the tire iron and move the wheels out of the workspace.

  • Disconnect the lower track bar mount from the front axle with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unbolt the shocks from the frame and the chassis with an open-end wrench and the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, and pull the front shocks out from the suspension. Unbolt the sway bar from the axle with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Lift te front of the chassis off the jack stands with the jack until the front coil springs pop out of the suspension. Pull the bumpstop mount off the frame with your hands. Install the spacer onto the frame by pushing it in place, then install the bumpstop mount on the bottom of the spacer.

  • Place the coil spring in the front suspension, then lower the front of the Jeep down so the frame contacts the suspension. Reinstall the front shocks with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench, the front sway bar links with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, and the track bar to the lower mount with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Reinstall the front wheels with the tire iron and lower the front of the Jeep off the jack stands with the jack.

Rear Suspension

  • Unbolt the shocks from the frame and the axle with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench. Unbolt the track bar from the lower mount on the axle with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Lift up the rear of the Jeep's chassis with the jack until the coil spring comes out of the suspension. Pull the bumpstop mount off the upper spring cups with your hands, then install the spacer into the upper spring cup. Install the bumpstop into the hole in the middle of the spacer.

  • Reinstall the springs into the suspension, then lower the chassis so the frame can settle on the springs. Reinstall the shocks to the chassis and axle with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench, then reinstall the track bar to the axle with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

  • Install the rear wheels with the tire iron and then lower the Jeep off the jack stands with the jack.
