How to Remove Toyota Door Moulding

On a Toyota, there are plastic door moldings that run the length of the vehicle which protect the underlying metal from getting dinged by a wide-swinging door or a shopping cart. They're not always the prettiest things, and some people prefer to take off the moldings and risk the potential damage for the better overall appearance. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2009 Toyota Corolla, but the process is similar for other Toyotas as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic squeegee
  • Hair dryer
  • Microfiber towels
  • Automotive detailing spray
  • Park the car in the sun so that the panels can heat up. Use the hair dryer to add additional heat to the moulding, right at the end of the piece, towards the front of the car. Place the plastic squeegee between the door and the moulding and work it between the two as you apply heat from the hair dryer.

  • Grab the end of the molding and pull it back at a sharp angle to the body to release the double-sided tape underneath the moulding. Position the hair dryer so that it's between the moulding and the door, and heat the tape as you're pulling away the moulding. Repeat this process for any other pieces of moulding that are on the car.

  • Rub off any excess automotive tape using your hand, then spray the panel with the automotive detailing spray and dry it off using a microfiber towel. Turn the towel frequently as you're drying so that you always have a fresh surface.
