How to Blackout Headlights

Tinting taillights and headlights has recently come back into style. This look is especially popular with dark vehicles, as it helps to blend the lighting into the paint. The process of blacking out headlights should take a few hours, most of which is dry time.

Things You'll Need

  • Masking tape
  • Masking paper
  • Fine scuffing pad
  • Headlight and taillight tinting paint
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Lint-free paper towels
  • Scuff the surface of the headlight using the scuffing pad to create a surface the paint will to stick to.

  • Clean the surface using rubbing alcohol and a lint-free paper towel. This will remove any contaminants from the surface.

  • Mask off the headlight using the masking tape and masking paper. Cover anything that you don't want to tint, including any surrounding metal.

  • Spray a light coat of the tinting spray over the headlights. This is a "tack" coat, designed to allow the first coat to set up and provide a chemical bond with the second coat.

  • Wait 15 minutes and then spray a slightly heavier coat but not heavy enough to cause the paint to run.

  • Repeat until you achieve the desired tint level.

  • Remove the masking tape and paper once the paint has dried, usually within an hour.
