How to Hook a Tractor PTO Up to an Augur

A auger is a implement that is used for digging holes. A tractor auger is a type of machine operated post hole diggers that are operated by the PTO shaft of the tractor. The machine operated post hole diggers make it possible to dig more holes compared to using a manual set of post hole diggers. When the PTO shaft of the tractor is engaged, the PTO turns the u-joint connection on top of the auger. The u-joint connection then turns the auger gear box which then turns the auger blade itself.

Things You'll Need

  • Tractor
  • Auger
  • Wheel chocks
  • Back the rear of the tractor toward the auger. Position the three-point hitch of the tractor close enough to the three-point hitch of the auger. Leave the tractors transmission in gear and turn the engine off.

  • Slide the wheel chocks in the front of both rear wheels and behind both rear wheels.

  • Connect the two lower arms of the tractors three-point hitch to the two lower three-point hitch connections on the auger. Slide the locking pins through the connections to hold the tractor arms to the augers lower three point hitch connections.

  • Hood the top arm of the tractors three-point hitch to the top three-point hitch connection on the auger. Slide the locking pins through the top auger connection to hold the top tractor arm in place.

  • Grab the front end of the augers driveshaft and slide it over the PTO shaft on the tractor. Press inward on the spring loaded locking pin that is located on the end of the augers driveshaft. Continue sliding the augers driveshaft overt the PTO shaft until the spring loaded locking pin reaches the recess area of the PTO shaft. Release the locking pin and it will pop back up and lock in place.
