How to Replace the Back Glass in a Chrysler Convertible

Rear windows are an important part of a car's structural integrity and this remains true for a Chrysler convertible. As a result, the back glass needs to be intact at all times so that your vehicle remains roadworthy. The window is prone to damage over time, especially if the top is frequently raised and lowered. Replacing the back glass on a convertible differs slightly than a standard vehicle. However, with the help of a friend and the right tools it is a manageable task.

Things You'll Need

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Clean cloth
  • Double-sided tape
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Plastic window trim removal tool
  • Replacement glass
  • Assistant
  • Rubber cement
  • Unfasten the hooks on the convertible top and lift it up a few inches from the back windshield.

  • Insert the plastic window trim removal tool between the black trim and the window. Slide it around the window underneath the trim to separate the two. Remove the trim by hand.

  • Remove the metal clip in the middle of the window, on the bottom edge, using a flat-head screwdriver. Loosen the other clip from the inside and then remove from the outside.

  • Unzip the window and place it carefully to the side.

  • Remove adhesive residue or debris from the window opening using rubbing alcohol to get rid of the most persistent bits. Use a dry cloth to clean up the area.

  • Insert the replacement window in the opening from the outside and have an assistant hold it in position. From the inside, zip the window in place and insert the metal clip in the same place the old one was attached, making sure to replace the support plate. Add double-sided tape over the clip.

  • Put rubber cement along the edge of the convertible top where it meets the window to help hold the trim firmly. Add cement to the edge of the trim and push it into place with the trim tool. Allow at least 24 hours for the glue to dry properly.
