How to Change an E39 3rd Brake Light

The BMW E39 was made from 1997 to 2003. The E39 code name refers to all 5 Series models made during the specified time period, such as the 528i or 525i. All E39 models have a third brake light. The third brake light, sometimes called a center-mounted stop light, is mounted behind the rear seat beneath the rear glass. The light is accessible from the car's trunk. Changing it shouldn't take longer than 10 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Gloves
  • Replacement bulb 1156
  • Open your E39's trunk and inspect the trunk trim beneath the third brake light assembly. You'll see a small plastic panel. Pry this panel off with a flat head screwdriver. This is the bulb access panel.

  • Turn the bulb holder counterclockwise to release it from the assembly, and then pull it straight down. You'll now have access to the bulb.

  • Grasp the bulb and pull it straight out of the holder. Do not twist it; this will damage the holder.

  • Insert the new bulb into the holder. Push it straight down without turning. Wear gloves when touching the new bulb to prevent it from getting dirty.

  • Push the holder back into the assembly and turn it clockwise. Apply the small panel to the access hold and push it straight up to reattach it.
