How to Start a Bobcat Skidsteer in the Cold

Bobcat skid steers are often used during the winter months to move the snow in the northern regions of the country where the winters are cold. Since excessive snow can make it impossible to get a vehicle out of a driveway it is necessary to make sure the snow can be removed. Preparing your Bobcat skid steer for cold weather can help to ensure you won't be snowed in.

Things You'll Need

  • Oil
  • Antifreeze
  • Diesel fuel
  • Battery charger
  • Check all of the fluid levels in the Bobcat skid steer loader. Antifreeze, oil and fuels need to be full and made for cold weather use. It may be necessary for users in extremely cold weather regions to use alternative diesel fuel that is designed for extreme cold weather use.

  • Attach a battery charger to the battery posts of the battery in the Bobcat engine compartment. Use a charger with the ability to show the current charge of the battery. Leave the battery charger connected if the battery doesn't show a full charge. Cold weather requires the battery to produce almost twice of the cranking amps in cold weather to start the Bobcat skid steer so it is important that the battery is fully charged.

  • Store the Bobcat skid steer inside of a shed if possible to protect it from the cold. Storing the skid steer inside will protect it from having frost and snow build up on the machine. If the vehicle is protected from the elements, the engine fluids will move more easily when the engine is turned over.
