How to Troubleshoot an Actron CP9145

Many vehicles made since 1998 have an installed computer. This computer displays information about the car. The Actron CP9145 is a scanner that you connect to the computer. It will tell you what problems you have with the vehicle. If the scanner malfunctions, it will be harder to determine the vehicle's problems. You have several ways to troubleshoot malfunctions.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Plug the CP9145's adapter firmly into the vehicle's cigarette lighter. A loose connection will cause power failure to the CP9145.

  • Follow prompts to press "Enter" to reset the tool if the tool enters an unrecoverable state. This sometimes happens after a vehicle communication fault.

  • Examine the ignition key and ensure that it is in the "On" position. If it is in the "Accessories" position, the scanner will not work.

  • Replace the battery if the tool is running on battery power and will not turn on. Locate the battery lid on the back of the scanner and unscrew the lid with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Insert a new 9-volt battery and reattach the lid.
