The fuel system in a 2003 Chrysler mini van uses a filter in line between the gas tank and the motor to get rid of any sediment or dirt that may be contained in the fuel system. The filters need to be replaced every 20,000 miles or so, because otherwise they can clog up and stop working properly, until they eventually starve the engine of fuel. Fortunately, replacing the filter is not a difficult process and can be done in an hour or so.
Open the gas door and remove the gas cap. Pop the hood and locate the fuel pressure test port on the side of the fuel rail at the top of the engine. Connect the fuel pressure release hose tool to the fuel pressure test port by hand. Release the pressure by pushing the button on the hose. Remove the hose.
Lift up the rear end of the van using the jack and set it down onto the jack stands. Set the jack so that it's contacting the bottom of the gas tank.
Unbolt the gas tank from the bottom of the chassis using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Lower the tank approximately eight inches from its stock position. Unbolt the ground strap from the tank with the ratchet.
Remove the lines running to the fuel filter using a flat-head screwdriver. Unbolt the fuel filter from the tank using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Discard the old filter.
Install the replacement filter using the flat-head screwdriver and the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
Lift the tank back into the stock location and bolt it in place using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Reinstall the ground strap and fuel lines using the flat-head screwdriver.
Lower the van down off the stands with the jack.
