How to Replace a Saab NG 900 Fuel Filter

The Saab 900, long recognized as a prestigious Swedish automotive brand, has a reputation for simplicity of design. On the 1994 through 1998 Next Generation 900 models, commonly known simply as the NG, the fuel filter placement continues the line's reputation for straightforward mechanics. With only basic tools, you can easily replace the fuel filter on a Saab NG900 in only a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement fuel filter
  • Size 10 adjustable wrench
  • Medium-sized pan
  • Wheel chocks

Prepare the Car

  • Drive the car to an area where you can easily access the underside of the vehicle. You will need to lay on the ground, so you may prefer concrete surfaces over gravel or asphalt.

  • Pull up on the hand brake to secure the car into place.

  • Position wheel chocks behind each wheel.

Replace the Fuel Filter

  • Look underneath the vehicle just behind the back tire on the passenger's side of the car. The fuel filter will resemble a silver metal canister.

  • Place the pan under the filter because fuel will likely spill when you loosen the filter. Position the pan to catch and contain any liquids that may escape.

  • Loosen the fuel line connector closest to you using the adjustable wrench. The connector may require some force to break loose. Once you loosen the connector, the connection will pull straight out of the fuel filter. A small amount of gasoline may drain into the pan.

  • Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the fuel line connector on the opposite side of the fuel filter; note that the connector on this side of the filter may be slightly larger than the first connector. Remove the fuel line as described above. A considerable amount of fuel may drain into the pan.

  • Remove and discard the old filter.

  • Connect the far connector into one opening on the new filter, then use the adjustable wrench to tighten the connector in place.

  • Connect the near connector into the remaining opening on the fuel filter, and use the adjustable wrench to tighten the connector in place.

  • Remove the pan, wheel chocks and old fuel filter; with the work area cleared, you have successfully changed the fuel filter on a Saab NG900.
