How to Reset a Ford Freestar Key Transponder

The Ford Freestar minivan was sold during the 2004-2006 model years and used the PATS II passive anti-theft system, which had an embedded transponder built into the vehicle's key. Resetting or programming the transponder requires two currently programmed keys and a specific sequence of actions.

Things You'll Need

  • At least two keys already programmed to work with the vehicle
  • Key to be programmed to work with the vehicle
  • Insert one of the two already programmed keys into the ignition switch. Turn the switch to the "On" ("Run") position. Leave it there for at least one second (but less than 10) and then turn it back to "Off." Remove the key.

  • Insert the second programmed key within 10 seconds. Turn the switch to the "On" ("Run") position. Leave it there for at least one second (but less than 10) and then turn it back to "Off." Remove the key.

  • Insert the unprogrammed key into the ignition switch within 20 seconds. Turn the switch to the "On" ("Run") position. Leave it there for at least one second and then turn it back to "Off." Remove the key. The security light will illuminate for three seconds if programming was successful.

  • Repeat Step 3 as necessary for any additional keys. Once finished, wait at least one minute before starting the vehicle.
