How to Replace a VW Fuel Filter

The fuel filter on a VW needs to be replaced after 30,000 miles. The filter helps to remove contaminates from the fuel that are picked up from the gas station, the gas tank or both. When the fuel filter gets sufficiently clogged, you may notice the vehicle start to hesitate and sputter. When this happens, you need to replace the filter.

Things You'll Need

  • 7mm socket
  • Socket wrench
  • New fuel filter
  • Container approved for fuel
  • Locate the fuel filter. On most VW vehicles, the filter is located in front of the passenger side rear wheel, underneath the vehicle. For most vehicles, it is accessible without jacking up the vehicle.

  • Remove the fuse for the fuel pump, turn on the vehicle and allow the vehicle to stall out. This will relieve most of the fuel pressure inside the system. Remove the gas cap to relieve the pressure in the fuel lines.

  • Place a catch pan underneath the fuel filter to catch any fuel that spills.

  • Remove the 7mm screw bolt that holds the fuel filter in place.

  • Remove the snap rings on the hoses connected to both ends of the fuel filter.

  • Pull the hoses off the ends of the filter.

  • Install the new filter. Installation is the reverse of removal. Replace the gas cap and the fuse for the fuel pump. Turn the vehicle on. It won't start right away, and you may need to crank it three or four times before the system finally delivers fuel to the engine.
