How to Charge a Hyundai Accent Battery

You can charge the battery in your Hyundai Accent in the event that a draw on the battery has rendered it incapable of producing enough cold cranking amps to turn the engine over. If the cause of the draw was leaving something electrical on that drained the battery, a charge to the battery can fully restore it. If the cause is unknown--and the battery continues to require a charge--it may be time to consider replacing the battery.

How to Charge a Hyundai Accent Battery

  • Open the hood to the Hyundai Accent.

  • Place the battery charger on the ground or a cart near the Hyundai Accent. Position the charger as far away from the battery in the engine compartment as the wires of the alligator clips will allow.

  • Set the battery dial options to match the desired battery type and amperage input on the charger. A Hyundai Accent uses a 12 volt battery. If applicable, set the volt dial indicator to 12 volts on the charger. Set the battery type dial indicator to "conventional" battery. Set the amps indicator dial on the battery charger to the desired amount. The lower the amp setting, the longer it will take to charge the battery, but the stronger the charge will be. Refer to the owners manual of the battery charger for more information on how to operate the charger. If the battery charger has an "on" button, do not activate it at this time.

  • Lift the red plastic positive terminal protector off of the positive battery terminal. The Hyundai Accent uses this protective cap to prevent corrosion from occurring on the terminals. Place the red alligator clip of the charger onto the positive battery terminal on the battery.

  • Place the black alligator clip of the battery charger onto an unpainted metal bracket or bolt head as far away from the battery as possible. Be sure that the wires of the alligator clips will not come into contact with any moving engine parts of the Accent.

  • Plug the battery charger into an outlet or a heavy gauge extension cord, then plug the cord into an outlet. If applicable, turn the power button to the on position on the battery charger. Some chargers may have a timing switch which will activate the power to the charger. If present, set the desired time and allow the Accent battery to charge.

  • Start the Hyundai Accent once the timer has expired or once the desired charging time has elapsed (turn off the power button on this type). Disengage the battery charger by unplugging from the outlet, then remove the black alligator clip first, then the red alligator clip last.
