How to Adjust the Timing in an Oldsmobile Alero

Adjusting the timing on an Oldsmobile Alero allows the installation of performance parts and fuel economy boosters. However, it requires expensive specialty equipment and an understanding of car computer programming. Changing the timing on an Oldsmobile Alero is a difficult project that takes several hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • GM calibration software
  • Tech 2 scan tool with cable pass-through device
  • Contact GM for a history of the vehicle's current updates and identify the version required for this project. GM software versions for the Oldsmobile Alero are only available on CD and require a subscription.

  • Verify the battery is fully charged and turn off all accessories such as the radio, lights and climate controls. Connect the PC to the Tech 2 scan tool with a cable pass-through device and turn the ignition to the "On" position without starting the engine.

  • Start the GM recalibration software on the PC and enter the correct data for your vehicle. Connect the Tech 2 scan tool to the diagnostic connector under the steering wheel and answer any questions that appear on the screen.

  • Select "Normal Programming" and highlight the recalibration version you wish to install. Start the data transfer and confirm the progress bar is active on the screen.

  • Wait for the transfer of data and the message "Programming Complete" to appear on the screen. The data transfer takes as long as 30 minutes depending on the size of the associated files. Turn the ignition to the "Off" position and remove the Tech 2 scan tool from the diagnostic connector.
