How to Paint Headlights Black

People often tint the windows and tail lights on their vehicles, but painting your headlights black is a less common creative option for personalizing your car. You can apply an even layer of black tint spray to completely cover the headlights on any style or type of vehicle in less than a day. Be sure to select a dust free work area in order to avoid any imperfections in the finished appearance.

Things You'll Need

  • Painter's tape
  • 220-grit sandpaper
  • Tint spray
  • Newspaper
  • Face mask
  • Window cleaner
  • Soft cloth
  • Line the headlights with painter's tape. Apply a 2-inch boarder of tape around the headlights to keep spray from touching the body of the car. Tape newspaper around the entire headlight so that it spans out at least 12-inches in each direction.

  • Rough up the surface of the headlights using the 220-grit sandpaper. This will create an adhesive surface for the spray.

  • Spray window cleaner on both headlights and remove liquid and dust from the surfaces using a soft cloth.

  • Shake tint spray vigorously for one to two minutes and apply an even coating over the headlights. Hold can 10-to-12-inches from the surface and avoid holding the can in one place for any extended period of time as this can cause puddling.

  • Repaint headlights after two hours to create a darker finish. Allow spray tint to dry completely before removing painter's tape and newspaper.
