Directions to Change the Oil in a 2007 Toyota Yaris

The Toyota Yaris is a subcompact car manufactured since 1999. At the 4,500 mile point, the oil replacement reminder light on the instrument cluster of a 2007 Yaris will flash when the engine is turned on. The flashing light indicates the oil should be changed soon. When 5,000 miles have been driven, the engine oil replacement reminder light will stay on. In order to keep your engine running smoothly, you should change the oil every 5,000 miles. Changing the oil on a 2007 Yaris requires an oil filter removal tool.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack and jack stands, or wheel ramps
  • Wheel chocks
  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Drain pan
  • Torque wrench
  • Toyota Special Service Tool 09228-06501, or 65mm cap wrench
  • Clean rag
  • Raise the front of the car with a jack and lower it onto jack stands. Alternatively, drive the Yaris onto wheel ramps. It is easier to work under the car when it is not low to the ground. Be sure to chock the rear tires.

  • Open the Yaris' hood and loosen the oil cap to release the vacuum. This will help the oil to drain better when you drain the pan.

  • Crawl under the car and locate the drain plug on the oil pan toward the base of the engine. Place a drain pan under the drain plug. Use a ratchet and socket to remove the oil drain plug and drain the engine oil. Allow the oil to totally drain from the oil pan.

  • Clean the oil drain plug and gasket and examine for signs of wear or damage. Replace the oil plug or gasket if damaged. Install the drain plug and torque it to 28 foot-pounds.

  • Use Toyota Special Service Tool (SST) 09228-06501 or a 65mm cap wrench to remove the oil filter. Position the drain pan to catch the oil from the filter.

  • Remove the old gasket if it did not come off with the oil filter. Use a clean rag to wipe the oil filter mating surface.

  • Use your finger to apply clean engine oil to the gasket of a new oil filter before installing it.

  • Screw the oil filter on the filter stud until the gasket is against the installation surface. Use the special Toyota tool or a 65mm cap wrench to tighten the oil filter. Use a torque wrench to tighten the oil filter to 9.5 foot-pounds. If there is not enough room to use a torque wrench, tighten to hand-tight plus a three-quarter turn.

  • Remove the oil cap from the engine and place a funnel in the hole in the oil reservoir Fill the oil reservoir with 3.9 quarts of SAE 5W-30 oil. Put the cap back on the oil reservoir.

  • Lower the car from the ramps or jack stands. Start the engine and let it idle.

  • Check for leaks under the car. Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes before checking the oil level.

  • Pull the oil dipstick and check the oil level. Add more oil if the level is low.

  • Follow the instructions in the Yaris owner's manual to reset the oil replacement reminder light.
