When we heard about HJC's all-new Super Lite Si-12 helmet, we just had to get our hands on one to test it out. The Si-12 features an innovative Composite Weave Shell that drops the weight of the brain bucket below three pounds. That's right, the Si-12 that HJC sent us weighed in at a paltry 2.98 pounds (we used the Pitney Bowes scale in the mailroom to verify the lack of heft).

It gets more impressive when you realize that the helmet is Snell SA-5 rated and comes with a fire resistant carbon interior plus a titanium vent on the top. Available in a variety of colors, the polycarbonate anti-fog faceshield boasts a 3D design that provides 95 percent UV protection and offers an anti-scratch coating as well.

All very cool features, but we decided to take the helmet to the track and give it a test session. It is remarkably light and almost feels like you're not even wearing a helmet at all, thanks in large part to how the interior padding is designed. Your face doesn't feel crammed or squished and the peripheral vision is excellent.

Designed using advanced CAD technology, the Si-12 features what HJC calls "ACS" or Advanced Channeling Ventilation System. This system allows full front-to-back airflow and flushes heat and humidity up and out, keeping you cool on those hot summer nights. The lighter weight and super ventilation system means less stress and heat on your head during races. Translate that into less physical exhaustion and the ability to focus more energy (physical and mental) on your driving.

The Si-12 comes in two colors, traditional white and the awesome-looking matte black (shown). HJC spent three years developing the HANS Device compatible Si-12. With the superlightweight design and great ventilation system, we think the $699.99 price tag is well worth it.
