Auto Insurance Claims: I rear-ended someone - I was in a rental, rear end accident, rental cal accident

Question
I was driving a rental car and rear-ended someone.  I believe the rental company provided insurance for the car because they did not ask me if I had insurance or if I wanted more insurance.  Actually, I did not even pay for the rental, my car dealership did as my car was being repaired by them.  Anyway, just wondering if the rental company will go after me for reimbursement of any claims made or will they just pay it?  Thank you in advance?

Answer
Jadmva,

Usually insurance follows the car. In your case, it is possible that the insurance company of the dealership will cover this since you did not sign a loaner agreement. You have to assume all liability (or disclaim all liability from the dealership).

If the dealership does not have coverage, or the car is not insured, then your insurance company will likely cover you in this accident. Insurance will follow the driver when there is no primary coverage on the car. In this case, the dealership car might not be insured, so your insurance company will have to pay, but if it is and the accident is covered (not excluded in the policy), then your insurance company will have to protect you.

Good Luck,
Anne
