one more comment - i did ask about the welding of manifold, as you commented to, since that is one of my mechanics specialties but he suggested to 'do it right' and find an aftermarket one, since that is all there is this many years later.  i will be in touch if i can't locate one through him.  as before, many thanks.

That is most likely your best bet, an exhaust system check is a good idea. I tell all of my customers to start simple and if need be then complex, that has saved me so much time and money. I drive a 99 rodeo lse and i have 166,000 and its still going strong.
