Land Rover Repair: 2000 Discovery, land rover discovery, inhibitor switch

Question
2000 Land Rover Discovery- I went to start my car and when i started it would not disengage from the park position.  Its stuck in Park. Everything seems fine.  I Checked the brake lights and when you step on the brakes the lights do not light up.  What can I do to get it out of park?
thanks so much

Answer
Hi Brad,

take a closer look at your brake pedal switch to see if its stuck.  You could try using a pair of pliers to ease the switch out - if it's stuck in place.  If you apply the brakes and the brake lights don't work, there's a good chance that this is the culprit.

The park/brake inhibitor switch on the gearbox may also be at fault and if suspected, the dealer usually just replaces this.

Best of luck,
