Land Rover Repair: Ignition Wires, land rover discovery, spark plug wires

Question
Hello John
I own a 2001 Land Rover Discovery II, I took it to the dealership because the service engine soon light came on. They recommended that we replace the spark plug wires. We declined the repair and ordered the set and gasket. We took it to our regular mechanic, but he was having a difficult time. He was wondering if he needed a special plier clamp to disconnect the hose to replace the spark plug wires in the back of the engine. He was afraid he might cut the hose and have to replace that also.
Thank you

Answer
I'm not sure what yo mean about needing special plier clamps . . . newer Land Rovers do require special pliers for fuel lines, hoses, etc but they are the sort of tool any well equippend import service person should have.

Replacement of ignition wires on that truck is a 3-hour job.  There is no easy way.

In addition, if you still have misfire faults you may find one or more of your Bosch coil packs have failed.  Often when the wires go bad they place stress on the coil packs and they fail, too.

Finally - be sure to use the correct Land Rover plugs, expensive as they are.  We have seen misfires from people who installed the cheaper plugs that from the older Rovers.
